Small Group Training
In November of 2012 I was in a car accident. After several months of massage, chiropractic treatment, and physical therapy, I was still feeling a lot of tightness and discomfort in my back, and had trouble moving into certain positions. I had gained a little bit of weight due to not being able to workout because of my back pain. I came to Darren for Muscle Activation Techniques or MAT as well as personal training early in 2013. This was the single best decision I made during the treatment for my back. Within the first two weeks I was able to start working out again and I believe MAT really helped accelerate my healing process. MAT helped my body to naturally let go of the tightness in my back, and the MAT testing helped Darren figure out which exercises I was responding well to, and which exercises were making my back worse. After several months of regular MAT and personal training sessions with Darren, my back was back to normal and I was able to workout on my own again. I've never experienced these types of results from other treatments. - Gary Franke (Insurance Broker and Investment Advisor in Bellevue, WA)
I have to be honest, I had never heard of MAT before Darren introduced me to it and though he explained it (and I understood the concept) I couldn't help but wonder how legitimate this stuff was. In general I have few physical complaints but somehow I managed to get a kink in my neck that was very paintful and wouldn't resolve. I some times can massage out the pain and knots but this was persistent and even when I would think it was gone, bam, it would return. I couldn't turn my head to either side (serious issue while driving) before getting worked on by Darren. At first I had zero expectation of improvement but I was blown away with how quickly he reduced my pain and restored my range of motion in my neck. He had me lie down on a massage table, and watched me turn my head and neck from side to side in some different positions which took maybe a few minutes. He said my neck was limited in right rotation. He tested and treated one muscle on my left side, and a different muscle on my right side. Then he asked me to turn my head from side to side again. BOOM I could turn my neck all the way to each side and with no pain. It took less than 10 minutes. I was amazed and felt slightly bad for being so skeptical and closed minded about something I hadn't tried yet. I would recommend him without hesitation for improvements in muscle function, range of motion, and pain reduction. It may not work for every type of pain, but it worked for mine. - J Hunter (CNA from Bothell, WA)
I was recovering from lower back surgery and trying to get back to my active life style. Working with Darren has taught me what is safe, effective, and productive with my body's recovery. I'm stronger now, and smarter about how I move my body and what workouts I do. I'm excited to achieve goals that I wasn't sure I could reach again after my surgery. Darren knows what he's doing!!! - Maureen Still (singer/songwriter from Northbend, WA)
I had been seeing Darren for a few achy joints and for restoring maximum muscle function. One issue that really stood out was when I hurt my right shoulder blade and upper back area. I was unsure what brought on the injury, but there was a lot of pinching/cramping sensation when I would have to support weight at certain angles with that arm. The issue was persisting longer than I thought it should, so I had Darren work on it with MAT. Understandably, most treatments for injuries would take a lot of time to resolve; however, in this specific case, after just a couple treatments on my shoulder and upper back, recover rapidly accelerated. In less than a month, that particular pain was gone, and it was a complete non-issue. My shoulder felt completely stable and strong again and I was able to get back to the level of initensity i'm used to working out at in the gym and with my sports performance. I believe muscle activation techniques was exactly what that shoulder issue needed, and that the pain would not have resolved as quickly without it. - Adam Yaw (Former gymnast, and cheer coach in Bellevue, WA)
I first started training with Darren to get back in shape after years of inconsistent workouts on my own. As we began the process, long term pain in my shoulder and knee limited my ability to do some of the exercises. So, I decided to try MAT. After several sessions, the pain lessened and I was able to complete my entire workout and take my fitness to the next level. Based on the great results I’ve achieved, I continue to supplement my workout routine with regular MAT sessions which has kept me pain free and feeling better than I have in years. - Kevin Higman (Executive from Woodinville, Wa)
I limit the size of my small personal training groups to no more than 6 people. By keeping the group size limited to 6 people I'm able to offer a much more customized experience compared to large group coaching where everyone is typically thrown into the same cookie cutter workout.
Each of my small group training members has their own personal 4 week workout program which is built around their wants, needs, goals, abilities, and limitations. If someone needs an on the fly adjustment to their program, I help them do that and personalize it as much as needed. Nobody gets lost in the shuffle as can often happen with large overwhelming groups.
Working out in a small group can give members increased motivation and accountability from the encouragement and support you get from the other members of the group. Training with others creates a higher energy level that helps you to really challenge yourself. Many of my clients will bring in friends or family members to be a part of their group, or will make new friends through the people they work out with on a regular basis.
Small group training gives people the opportunity to have top quality coaching and support all year round to make sure they have the best chance at reaching their goals and maintaining those results for the long term.

Muscle Activation Techniques™ is a specific and unique process for evaluating an individual’s ability to produce efficient muscle contraction. Loss of muscle contraction results in a decreased range of motion, and therefore decreased physical performance.
Range of motion testing can indicate which muscles have decreased function, and precise forces are applied to restore that muscle’s optimal function. The MAT™ Certified Specialist is trained and certified to perform several force application techniques that can restore function and strengthen weak muscles.
In no time at all, you will be performing your daily activities with ease, with less muscle tightness and pain, whether that means throwing 40 yard passes, running a 5k or walking up and down the stairs!
From the time I was 12 I’ve been a big believer in the physical and emotional benefits of exercise, proper nutrition and fitness. Working out helped me improve my sports performance, gain more self confidence, and led me to a career helping others gain similar benefits.
I was also motivated to take better care of myself and eventually motivated to help others by seeing a close family member suffer from various ailments due to neglect of their health and fitness by being sedentary and having poor nutrition.
People decide to change their health and fitness habits for many different reasons, but beneath all those reasons, people mainly want more happiness and less pain. If I can help my clients become happier by working towards or achieving their fitness goals, then I feel I’m doing something worthwhile with my life.
While I hold a special place in my heart for working with various types of athletes to perform better as well as stay healthy and injury free, I mostly specialize in working with regular men & women between the ages of 35 to 60 years old that are balancing the busy demands of career and family. I see how much people give of their time and energy, and how draining and stressful that can be over time if they never take the time to take care of themselves. I give people that outlet to dedicate a small amount of time several times per week to focusing on their needs and leave everything else at the door for 30 to 60 minutes.
I've been full time in the fitness industry since 2002 and I've seen a lot of workout and diet approaches come and go. I've tried all kinds of programs on myself as well as clients over the years. The most important thing I've learned after seeing people struggle or jump from program to program to program and chasing the next shiny thing, is everyone is different and there is no perfect diet or workout program for everyone.
That is why I customize every aspect of my coaching whether for exercise or nutrition to the unique needs and abilities of each client. I focus on helping my clients learn long term habits at their own pace, and making changes that will stick, instead of forcing extreme diet or fitness programs on people that end up only working in the short term.
I truly believe that is why most of my clients train with me for years, not months. They fully trust that I have their long term health and best interests at heart, and that I put myself in their shoes and understand how they feel. I know when to push them harder and encourage them to go out of their comfort zone, and I know when to back off and go a little easier on them.
Being someone's coach is an honor to me. It's not as superficial as just telling someone to do something and making it so hard that they want to pass out or throw up. It's really getting to know them and understand what makes them tick. It's helping guide them and empower them to make better choices on their own. It's being the support system people need when the struggle and stress hits so hard some days that make people want to give up.
That's what gets me up in the morning and has made me love my job for the last 16 years, and I look forward to helping people change their lives for the next 16 years.
